Sign of the Times

We are living in a time where it is seemingly hard to tell the truth from a lie. Widespread participation in social media leads to false information quickly going viral, with no one taking a moment to verify truth in the claims. But if we take a moment to peek back at some of our earliest quotes attributed to Jesus, we can gain insight on how to handle an occurrence that isn’t so new after all.

He also said to the crowds, “When you see a cloud rising in the west, you immediately say, ‘It is going to rain’; and so it happens. And when you see the south wind blowing, you say, ‘There will be scorching heat’; and it happens. You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of earth and sky, but why do you not know how to interpret the present time?

~Luke 12:54-56

He answered them, “When it is evening, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.’ And in the morning, ‘It will be stormy today, for the sky is red and threatening.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times.

~Gospel of Matthew 16:2-3

They said to him: “Tell us who you are so that we may believe in you.” He said to them: “You read the face of the sky and the earth, but you do not know the one who is before you, nor do you know how to read this moment.”

~Gospel of Thomas 91:1-2

Maya Angelou taught us that “[w]hen someone shows you who they are, believe them.” And Oprah Winfrey added, “the first time!” If actions indeed speak louder than words, then it’s simply time for us to wake up and pay attention.
