The Temple of Apollo and the site of the oracle in Delphi

Corinth, Philippi, Thessaloniki, where Paul taught and the earliest Christian communities gathered

Eleusis, the site of the Eleusinian mysteries

The spectacular monasteries on the cliffs of Meteora

Cruise to the island of Aegina for the Temple of Aphaia and swim at the Agia Marina beach

This trip to Greece will offer an exciting and close look at the history, politics, and social life of the Greco-Roman world in which Christianity emerged. Led by four scholars of early Christianity and the ancient Mediterranean, as well as a Greek guide, this travel experience will paint vivid pictures of everyday life in ancient Greece, including early Christian social practices. It will paint a three-dimensional picture of religion and politics of the Greco-Roman world, as we see the many ways ancient people engaged divine figures and navigated the social pains and possibilities of the Roman Empire. Most importantly, we will actively integrate early Christian literature, especially the letters and later traditions of Paul, in the colorful, surprising, and haunted world in which they emerged.
